When you think of your home, you think of a safe place for you and your family. You try to keep it as clean as possible by doing the dishes, the laundry and vacuuming. But, are you paying enough attention to what is going on behind the walls, in the crawl spaces, in the garage and in the attic? These spaces can be breeding grounds for pests such as cockroaches, mice, rats, silverfish and an array of other insects. Keeping your home clear of these pests is a huge part of making sure your family stays healthy.
According to Steve, who works in pest control in Rockledge, Florida, most people think as long as they don’t see these bugs then they are fine. But they are mistaken. “Roaches and other insects will often wait until the family is fast asleep to scavenge for food and water. They can sense the vibration people make and know when the coast is clear. They will then make their way out of the nooks and crannies of your home and walk all over your countertops, tables and chairs.”
This may seem harmless enough, but when you consider all the diseases that roaches carry, it is not harmless at all. Cockroaches can transmit the pathogen salmonella through their droppings.
Human intestinal bacteria called Escherichia coli is known to cause food poisoning in some strains. Hepatitis A: A virus that cockroaches can spread by their excrement and that can be contracted by tainted food or water. An intestinal inflammatory condition known as dysentery can result in severe diarrhea, cramping in the stomach, nausea, and vomiting. Cockroaches are known to harbor the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus.
It’s not a pretty picture when you boil it down. Keeping your home free from these insects is the only way to guard against them infecting your home with these pathogens.
You can try various over-the-counter pest control methods or you can call a professional service. The bottom line is that you want to keep your home as pest free as humanly possible.
